Leigh Ann

Founder & Coordinator

In 2012, Leigh Ann received an award from the Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre in recognition of her work as a Women’s Rights Defender. She holds a certificate in Community Journalism from the University of South Africa and is working towards finalising a B.A. degree in Communication Science. She is very passionate about feminism and women’s rights.

Leigh Ann van der Merwe was born in Ugie, Eastern. Growing up as a gender questioning person, she struggled to conform to typical male gender codes and as a result always felt left out both in family life and at school. It was through another trans woman that Leigh Ann was introduced to trans activism in 2007. Her experience of activism includes being a candidate in the Transitioning Africa Exchange Program from 2010 to 2011. Leigh Ann was also a fellow in the Open Society/Austrian American Foundation/Transgender Centre of Excellence program in Salzburg, Austria during October 2011 and presented at a transgender consultation at UNAids in Geneva during November 2011. She holds a seat on the United Nations steering committee for transgender people in the Global South. Leigh Ann reviewed a number of gender literature resources produced by other NGO’s and was part of the study team on a UNFPA report on the challenges of sex workers in the East London area. She is actively involved with a number of NGO’s dealing with gender & women’s issues, HIV and public health. She is also the secretary of the board of an East London based NGO working with orphans and vulnerable children. She presented two papers at the first ever Gender Dynamix Transgender Health and Research Conference, November 2011. Her paper on Transgender Feminism is currently under review for the New Voices in Psychology publication with the University of South Africa.

Nombulelo Duze

Nurse & Peer Supervisor

Ms Duze’s role has to do with ensuring all health paraphernalia used by SHE staff is clean and sterilized. She also councils clients and ensures the overall supervision of health and safety standards in the workplace are met using her nursing skills.

Ms Duze is a Registered Nurse who has more than 40 years of experience working as a nurse. She completed a 3 years course and obtained a Junior Certificate in Nursing at Frere Hospital.

Felicity De kock

Administrator & PA to the Director

Felicity’s duties entail all administrative functions at S.H.E. She also helps with data capturing for Right to Care and overlooks the director’s diary and liaisons with other stakeholders.
More about me
Felicity matriculated at Alphendale College in East London. She went on to study banking and soon found work as Service Manager for FNB and later as a business banker for Standard Bank before commencing work at S.H.E.

Olwethu Gqokoma

Book Keeper

Olwethu’s role entails maintaining all records of financial transactions by establishing accounts, posting transactions, ensuring legal requirements are met, reconciling accounts to ensure their accuracy and that compliance is met.
More about me
Olwethu matriculated at Thubalethu High School in Alice after that she went on to further her studies at the Eastern Cape Midlands College where she obtained a National Diploma in Financial Management. Olwethu also holds a certificate in Peer Education.

Vuyo Ludidi

Media Advisor

Mr Ludidi is in charge of all media and communications related matters at SHE. He helps conducts media liaisons between S.H.E and various media houses. He documents activities held at SHE and sends them to media houses to be published.
More about me
He is also the Editor-In-Chief of the organisations in-house publication,The Transfeminista. Mr Ludidi holds a National Diploma in Journalism from ICESA Education.

Khanyisa Qoto

Managing & Evaluation Officer

Khanyisa works as a fundraiser for the baseline gap on strategic plan budget. She also personally assists the director on program related duties.

Khanyisa obtained a National Diploma in Information Technology: Software Development from The Walter Sisulu University(WSU). She also holds a National Certificate for HIV Testing Services from National Aids Convention of South Africa (NACOSA) and she has also obtained a National Certificate in Facilitation from Soul City Institute for Social Justice.

Nyameko Maqobozo

Human Rights Officer

Responsible for engaging with communities about human rights, supervising paralegals, coordinating support groups, documenting hate crimes and advocating for LGBTI groups.
More about me
Nyameko matriculated in Kusile Comprehensive High School and then she went to study at the Buffalo City TVET College were she graduated with a Tourism Management: National Vocational Qualification.

Siya Makiva

Paralegal

Siya engages the community about LGBTI rights, she also assists LGBTI community members with any legal challenges they may and helps them seek justice in the court of law.

Siya matriculate in Tinarha High School and also received training as radio disk jockey from the Love life Youth Center.

Siya Mahlakahlaka

Paralegal

Siyamthanda’s role as a paralegal entails raising awareness in communities about hate crimes against the LGBTI community, fighting discrimination and helping LGBTI community members who have been victims of hate crimes find justice in the court of law.

Siyamthanda went to Midlands College to study Tourism Management.

Pumla Ngambu

Technical Support Officer

Ms Ngambu is responsible coordinating reports for the entire organisation, she also drafts donors reports and conducts research and development and is also responsible for monitoring and evaluation.
More about me
Ms Ngambu studied in Buffalo City College (BCC) and completed courses in Computer Literacy, Communications and Accounting.

Smayile Masisi

Paralegal

Smayile’s role as a paralegal is to engage the LGBTI community and fight for their rights to be treated equally before the law. Masisi assists LGBTI members in disadvantage communities on dealing with hate crimes cases and helps process their legal matters so they can appear before the law.

Smayile went to Sinovuyo High School and further went on to study at Capston Academy and received a certificate in Security.

Zoleka Leni

Office Assistant

Zoleka Leni was born and raised in Tsholomnqa, Eastern Cape. She passed grade 11 at Mzokhanyo High School and has been working at S.H.E as an Office Assistant for the past four years. She is a mother of two children.

Wandile Dyoba

HRM & Office Finance

Wandile Dyobi is a trans woman born in Komga, Eastern Cape. She completed her matric in Hlumani High School in 2009 and later obtained a N6 Diploma in Human Resource Management (HRM) at the Buffalo City TVET College. She currently works as an in-service trainee at S.H.E.
More about me
She assists in HRM and finance office duties. Wandile has also participated in our flagship program Miss Trans Diva 2018.

Roselba Ross

Health Programs Supervisor

Roselba Ross is an East London native who serves as a Programs Manager for S.H.E. Her responsibilities include overseeing and supervising the health programs. Ms Ross obtained a Diploma in Business Management and numerous certificates in health assessment, moderation and facilitation work at the ETDP SETA.

Zikhona Ncukana

Finance & Administration Manager

Ms Ncukana performs various accounting tasks related to the maintenance, reviewing of financial and statistical records at S.H.E. She also develops budgets, maintains organisational control of budgeting systems that provide control and forecast of expenditure.

Ms Ncukana has more than 10 years of experience as a Financial Manager. She studied Financial Information Systems at The Walter Sisulu University and has completed short courses in Bookkeeping in Payroll Administration (level 1 - 5) of Softline Pastel at Damelin.

Babalwa Kokwe

Human Resource Officer

Ms Kokwe works close with the organisation particularly in a consultancy role, develop advice on implement policies relating to the effective use of personnel within the organisation. Develops job description and and person specification. Checking applications forms, short listing, preparing adverts, interviewing and selecting candidates, Reference checking.

Ms Kokwe matriculated in Khanyisa High School in Mthatha and went on to further her studies at The Walter Sisulu University where she completed a National Diploma in Local Governance Finance.
