Human Rights Program

Attaining gender equality for LGBT people is central to creating an enabling environment in which to thrive. The Human Rights Program at S.H.E support the LGBTIQ+ community in the Eastern Cape in the following way:

  • Trans Paralegal is a platform created to support transgender and gender non conforming persons to apply for gender amendment in accordance with the Amendment of Sex Description and Sex Status Act 49 of 2003. The same program is aimed at providing support for survivors of hate crimes based on sexual orientation/gender identity.
  • Love Not Hate Campaign supports the survivors of hate crimes based on sexual orientation/gender identity. Clients are linked to a psychosocial provider for counselling and support, and are assisted in reporting and monitoring cases with the South African Police Services or any other body.
  • Through this program we also participate on the Eastern Cape Provincial Task Team (PTT) mandated to respond to hate violence based on sexual orientation/gender identity.
  • We conduct educational workshops with parents / schools / communities / LGBT people / religious institutions and other structures to teach on the human rights of queer folks.
